Job Introduction
Join Us as a BTP Special Constable - Police Officer to Special Constable Pathway
Are you a current British Transport Police Officer, or have you left your regular BTP Police Officer role within the last 12 months? If so, you may be eligible to join the BTP Special Constabulary through our Police Officer to Special Constable Pathway.
This pathway has been designed to support current and recently serving BTP Officers who wish to continue contributing to policing in a voluntary capacity. It provides an opportunity to use your existing skills, knowledge and experience to continue supporting colleagues, passengers and the railway network as a BTP Special Constable.
Whether you are leaving regular service due to retirement, a change in personal circumstances, career plans or other commitments, your experience and dedication remain highly valued.
As a BTP Special Constable, you will continue to make a meaningful contribution to keeping the travelling public safe across Britain's Rail Network.
Important: Special Constables are Volunteer Police Officers and are not BTP employees. This pathway is a route to voluntary appointment as a Special Constable and should not be described as an Employed Post or Employment Contract.
Why Become a BTP Special Constable?
At BTP, our purpose is clear. Keeping the travelling public safe.
As a current or recently serving BTP Police Officer, you already understand the unique nature of railway policing and the importance of the role we play.
We’re looking for individuals who:
- Remain committed to public service and public safety.
- Want to continue supporting BTP after leaving regular service.
- Understand the difference between serving as a regular police officer and serving in a voluntary policing role.
- Can bring valuable policing experience, skills and knowledge to the Special Constabulary.
- Are committed to maintaining high professional standards.
- Want to continue making a positive contribution to BTP, our colleagues, passengers and railway communities.
If that sounds like you, we'd love to hear from you.
Eligibility Criteria:
You may be eligible to become a BTP Special Constable if:
- You are currently serving with British Transport Police and intend to resign or retire from your Regular Police Officer role, or you have resigned or retired from a Regular Police Officer role within the last 12 months.
- Your preferred posting location has capacity within the Special Constabulary and is able to support an additional Special Constable.
- You meet the vetting, medical, fitness and appointment requirements applicable to BTP Special Constables.
- You meet any requirements relating to prohibited or restricted occupations applicable to members of the BTP Special Constabulary.
- Where you retire before the age of 55 and intend to take Police Pension benefits, you observe a six-month break in service before commencing as a Special Constable.
- All other applicants will be required to undertake the standard one-week break in service before commencing as a Special Constable.
You Will Not Be Eligible If You:
- Resigned while subject to a live misconduct investigation.
- Are subject to any live misconduct, complaint, performance or attendance management process.
- Left BTP while on a formal UPP stage.
- Left BTP while on Stage 2 of the Attendance Management Process.
