Have you previously served with the British Transport Police?

Whether you stepped away from policing or continued your career elsewhere at another Force; your skills, experience and commitment to public service are still valued here and we’d love to welcome you back.

Eligibility Criteria:

You may be eligible to return as a Police Constable if:

  • There is a vacant post at your preferred posting location (recruitment will check this for you).
  • You left BTP in the same rank you wish to return to within 12 months, or within 5 years if you have continuous police service

You must not have:

  • Been on any formal UPP stage when leaving BTP
  • Been on Stage 2 for sickness upon leaving
  • Any live investigations, complaints, performance issues, or misconduct warnings (including from other forces)
  • Any active CCJs, unmanaged IVAs, or bankruptcy
  • Been dismissed from another force
  • Retired from BTP

Further internal reference checks will be completed by divisional HR, and final approval will be required from your Divisional Commander.

Recruitment Process

  1. Application
     Provide a short summary outlining why you want to return to BTP.
  2. Eligibility Checks
     Recruitment will carry out internal reference checks.
  3. Conditional Offer
     If you meet our criteria to return, you’ll receive your conditional offer and begin standard recruitment checks.
  4. Start Date & Onboarding
     We’ll agree your start date and issue your contract and offer letter.

Training Requirements

  • Returning within 12 months of leaving BTP:
     You can re-join your division directly, where any mandatory training and attestation will take place.
  • Returning after 12 months and joining from another force:
    You’ll attend a 4‑week T&R induction course in London before posting to division.
