The Opportunity:
British Transport Police have an opportunity for a Civil Action Officer to join the Legal Services Department. As a Civil Action Officer with BTP, you will support the Solicitor (Civil Litigation) in handling civil actions, judicial reviews, article 2 inquests including all inquests requiring legal representation arising out of negligence or wrongdoing. The post holder will be responsible for evaluating and collecting evidence, investigating the incident, corresponding with Solicitors and counsel and arranging witness statements where necessary.
What you'll be doing:
- Collaborate with BTP teams on inquests that may require legal representation, ensuring appropriate legal support and coordination as needed.
- Research and collate relevant papers, documentation and information for claims, potential misconduct claims, judicial reviews and inquests as required
- Work with Professional Standards Department (PSD) to identify complaints and conduct matters that could potentially develop into claims against or by BTP and escalate to Solicitor (Civil Litigation) for review.
- Responsible for managing all types of low value claims up to £500, with support from the Claims Handlers and Solicitor (Civil Litigation)
- To monitor the force command and control system for any incidents that may result in a civil claim, paying special attention to fatalities and adding to the morning briefing, when required.
- Assist the Legal Services Practice Manager in gathering and presenting financial information for submission to the Finance Department.
What you'll bring to the team:
- Proven experience of working in a busy misconduct, complaints or civil action environment
- Experience of working for a police organisation with an understanding of police powers and procedures
- Up to date knowledge and understanding of policing, criminal investigations procedures
- Understanding of judicial review legislation
- Understanding of public sector claim legislation, Coroners Act, Inquest process, case law and regulatory requirements in relation to litigation
