The Opportunity:

British Transport Police have an opportunity for a Communications Data Investigator to join the Digital Intelligence Unit. As a Communications Data Investigator with BTP, you will be responsible for the lawful acquisition and analysis of communications data in accordance with the Investigatory Powers Act 2016. 

You will provide specialist advice and use communications data, digital intelligence and analytical techniques to identify investigative opportunities, support safeguarding activity, locate vulnerable persons and support serious crime investigations and intelligence operations. This is a specialist accredited role and successful applicants will receive training to become an accredited Communications Data Investigator working within a nationally recognised investigative capability.

The post participates in the Communications Data on-call rota and attracts a 10% on-call allowance. Successful applicants will be required to provide out-of-hours support for urgent operational and Life at Risk enquiries.

A blended approach to home and office working is available. Due to the specialist nature of the role, successful applicants should expect a higher level of office attendance during their initial training and accreditation period.

What you'll be doing:

• Providing specialist advice relating to communications data to support investigations, intelligence operations and crimes in action. 
• Reviewing, providing quality assurance and supporting communications data applications to ensure compliance with relevant legislation and codes of practice. 
• Identifying, acquiring, interpreting and evaluating communications data from communication service providers to support investigations and crime prevention activity. 
• Collaborating with investigators, analysts and communication service providers to develop effective investigative strategies and facilitate the efficient transfer of data.

What you'll bring to the team:

• Experience of utilising a variety of computer software packages to collect, review and interpret a wide range of datasets. 
• The ability to analyse complex problems, provide clear advice and adapt communication styles to different audiences. 
• Effective time management skills to be able to prioritise workloads whilst interpreting and applying relevant guidance.
• Proactively develop effective working relationships with colleagues, partners and stakeholders. 
• Degree level education/ equivalent qualification in a relevant discipline or possess relevant work experience.
