British Transport Police (BTP) is the national police force for the rail network throughout Great Britain. Join us and help create an environment where we can all be our best every day.

The Opportunity:

Are you an experienced investigator or intelligence professional looking for a role where your work has a direct impact on operational policing?

British Transport Police (BTP) is seeking an Intelligence Development Officer to join the Force Intelligence Bureau (FIB). In this challenging and rewarding role, you'll develop intelligence that supports investigations and operational activity across the rail network, helping to identify threats, tackle criminality and protect the public.

Working both independently and alongside specialist teams, you'll gather and develop intelligence, identify patterns and emerging risks, conduct field-based enquiries, and turn information into actionable intelligence that directly supports policing operations.

You'll also have the opportunity to work closely with regional organised crime partners, embedding with both the South West Regional Organised Crime Unit (SW ROCU) and the Welsh ROCU, developing strong cross-agency relationships and contributing to intelligence-led operations that tackle serious and organised crime.

If you're curious, proactive and thrive in a fast-paced environment where no two days are the same, we'd love to hear from you.

What you'll be doing:

  • Developing intelligence that drives action - identifying intelligence gaps, gathering and evaluating information from multiple sources, and producing high-quality intelligence reports that directly support investigations, operations and force priorities.

  • Conducting intelligence-led operational activity - undertaking overt and covert enquiries, deployments and observations, using approved tactics and legislation to develop intelligence opportunities and support proactive policing operations.

  • Turning information into operational outcomes - analysing complex information, identifying crime trends, risks and emerging threats, preparing intelligence packages, and delivering briefings that influence decision-making and operational activity.

  • Working alongside specialist policing teams and partners - collaborating with investigators, surveillance teams, Regional Organised Crime Units (ROCUs), and partner agencies to disrupt criminality, tackle serious and organised crime, and support intelligence-led operations.

  • Building relationships and developing intelligence networks - working with colleagues, external agencies and partners to maximise intelligence opportunities, share information effectively and contribute to strategic and tactical policing responses

What you'll bring to the team:

Essential Requirements

  • Full, current UK driving licence and authorised to drive police vehicles.
  • Experience working within a law enforcement, intelligence, investigative or covert policing environment, with a proven ability to develop enquiries and progress intelligence opportunities.

  • Strong analytical skills, with the ability to identify patterns, assess risk, evaluate information from multiple sources and draw well-reasoned conclusions.

  • Excellent communication skills, with experience producing high-quality reports, intelligence products and operational briefings for a variety of audiences.

  • The confidence to work both independently and collaboratively, using initiative to make decisions and manage competing priorities in a fast-paced operational environment.

  • Experience handling sensitive information and using intelligence systems, alongside a good understanding of intelligence-led policing and information management principles.

  • Knowledge of intelligence and investigative legislation and frameworks, including RIPA, the National Intelligence Model (NIM), CPIA and information management requirements.

Additional Information:

There is a requirement to work flexible hours, sometimes evenings, weekends and throughout the night. There could be a requirement to work away from home.
