Salary & Grade: Police Sergeant Salary + £5,588.18 Police Officer London Allowance and £3,150 Police Officer London Weighting for London based candidates

Contract Type: Temporary – up to 36 months (Secondment Opportunity)

Location: Any of our main hubs - Birmingham, London, Cardiff, Manchester, Leeds, or Glasgow

Type of Working Arrangement: Blended approach of home and office-working is available

Hours: This is a full time role (40 hours per week)

The opportunity:

Are you looking for your next exciting career move? National Police Chiefs Council, through their Less Lethal Weapons Portfolio hosted by British Transport Police have an excellent secondment opportunity for a Police Sergeant to join the NPCC Less Lethal Weapons Department. As an NPCC Less Lethal Weapons Police Sergeant, you will provide specialist national support to the NPCC Less Lethal Weapons (LLW) portfolio. You will coordinate day-to-day activity across a broad range of LLW projects, maintain critical partnerships, and ensure forces and agencies receive timely, expert advice on the use, development, governance and scrutiny of LLW capabilities. The role contributes to national policy, continuous improvement, operational assurance and stakeholder engagement in an area of high public interest and operational importance.

 

What you'll be doing:

  • Coordinate day‑to‑day national activity across the NPCC Less Lethal Weapons (LLW) portfolio, providing timely specialist advice and support to forces and partner agencies.
  • Support, manage and oversee multiple national LLW projects, including the overarching 5–50m project, from early development through to operational deployment, including community engagement.
  • Act as a central point of contact for LLW governance, assurance and scrutiny, including managing CED fault reporting and supporting post‑incident processes through the SME network.
  • Build and maintain strong national partnerships with key stakeholders such as the Home Office, College of Policing, DSTL, IOPC and other oversight bodies.
  • Contribute to national policy development, research, data analysis and reporting, including FOI responses, presentations and evidence for national enquiries.
  • Provide day‑to‑day tasking, coordination and quality assurance for staff supporting the LLW portfolio, ensuring work is prioritised and delivered to national standards.
  • Supporting the Deputy Portfolio Lead, working alongside the Analyst and managing the Business Support Officer. 

 

What you’ll bring to the team:

  • Strong operational policing background, with experience of use of force, tactical decision‑making, risk assessment and post‑incident procedures.
  • In‑depth knowledge of Less Lethal Weapons, including operational use, governance frameworks, research evidence and national policy.
  • Experience providing specialist advice or oversight in complex, sensitive or high‑profile matters subject to scrutiny, investigation or public interest.
  • Excellent analytical skills, with the ability to interpret technical reports, research, data and emerging trends to inform national capability and policy.
  • Confident communicator with strong written and verbal skills, able to present complex or sensitive information clearly to diverse audiences.
  • Proven ability to build effective relationships and work collaboratively with national policing bodies, government departments and external partners.
  • Strong organisational and coordination skills, managing multiple workstreams or projects across forces or agencies at pace.
  • Experience contributing to policy, guidance, organisational learning or continuous improvement at a local, regional or national level.

Eligibility Criteria:

In order to be considered for this role, applicants must meet the initial eligibility requirements below. By submitting an application, you are self-certifying that you meet this criteria:

  • Must be substantive in the rank of Sergeant and have completed probation
  • Must have lived in the UK for the past 3 consecutive years
  • No live misconduct warnings or performance issues
  • Cannot be under current investigation by another force
  • An existing or past member of the national practitioner group.
  • Have completed the Taser Subject Matter Expert (SME) course 
  • Is or has been a Taser Instructor in the last 5 years

This secondment is open to external applicants currently employed by a UK Police Force.

The secondment requires the agreement of the applicant’s current employer. BTP will work with the seconding organisation to agree terms.


Vetting: Successful applicants will be required to pass Recruitment Vetting (3 years minimum UK residency required), including a full background and financial disclosure.

Medical: We’ll ask for relevant health and medical history details to support employee wellbeing.

References: We’ll ask for references to cover the past 5 years.
