About the Programme
At British Transport Police (BTP), we’re committed to building a police force that reflects and serves our communities. Our Work Experience Programme offers a rare opportunity to step into the world of policing and explore a wide range of roles and departments.
Placements are available at various locations across the country.
During your time with us, you’ll meet officers, staff, and volunteers from roles such as:
- Firearms officers
- Dog handlers
- Crime scene investigators
- Local policing teams
- Detectives
- Control room staff
You’ll hear about their work, see demonstrations of their skills and equipment, and even get hands-on with some activities. You’ll also take part in interactive exercises and share your ideas about policing.
At the end of the programme, you’ll meet our Recruitment Team to learn how to apply for roles at BTP, and hear from a newly trained officer about their journey into policing.
Locations & Dates
Manchester
- Placements: Two, 3-day courses
- Dates: Week commencing 27th April and 20th July 2026
Birmingham
- Placements: Two, 2-day courses
- Dates: Week commencing 18th May and 10th August 2026
London
- Placements: Three, 4-day courses
- Dates: Week commencing 30th March, 1st June, and 24th August 2026

✅ Eligibility Criteria
- You must be aged 14–17 at the time of the programme
- You must be in secondary education (we do not accept university placements)
- You must be confident travelling between sites if required
- You must use a personal email address when applying – school emails may block our messages
