The Opportunity:
British Transport Police (BTP) have an opportunity for a Property Officer to join the Scientific Support Unit As a Property Officer with BTP, you will play a key role in maintaining the integrity, security and compliance of police property and exhibits, ensuring they are managed in line with Force policy and legislative requirements.
You will be responsible for the administration and day‑to‑day management of the property store within SSU (Digital Forensics Services). This includes accurately recording items, booking property in and out, and completing regular audits. The role also involves the secure handling and storage of sensitive items and exhibits, ensuring they are available for court, retained for long‑term storage, or disposed of appropriately in accordance with Force policy. You will help ensure the property store and its contents are managed to the highest standards of accuracy, security and integrity.
What you'll be doing:
- Managing the Property Store and evidence records, ensuring all items are accurately received, logged, stored and updated on case management and property databases in line with Force policy.
- Maintaining continuity and security of evidence, controlling access to the Evidence Store, conducting regular audits, and ensuring efficient retrieval, return or lawful disposal of property and exhibits.
- Supporting officers and investigations, liaising on property responsibilities, monitoring storage times, arranging authorised disposals, and ensuring exhibits are available for court as required.
- Ensuring compliance and quality standards, applying mandatory quality and forensic standards, maintaining specialist equipment and assets, managing sensitive and special property (including digital media and hazardous items), and supporting audits and inspections.

Essential Skills
- Strong attention to detail, with a consistent focus on accuracy, quality and compliance.
- Ability to follow and apply strict procedures, policies and legal requirements.
- Competent in using IT systems to accurately record, manage and track exhibits or assets.
- Clear understanding of confidentiality, data protection and information security.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills, able to communicate professionally with colleagues.
- Self‑motivated, adaptable and confident, with the flexibility to respond to changing operational demands.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel and Outlook.
Desirable Criteria
- Experience
Previous experience handling sensitive materials and maintaining continuity of evidence.
Experience working within a police or similar operational environment. - Knowledge
Knowledge of BTP policies and procedures.
Awareness of quality assurance frameworks, including ISO 17025 and the Forensic Science Regulator’s Code of Practice and Conduct.
Additional Information:
The role requires meticulous attention to detail and concentration to ensure no errors occur or records are lost of misfiled.
Items of property either of high value or of an illegal and/or dangerous nature will be stored in the property store for which the post holder will be fully accountable.
Due to the specialist operational nature of this role, post holders must provide finger/palm prints and a DNA sample for elimination purposes.
