The Opportunity:
British Transport Police (BTP) is seeking an experienced and proactive M&E Engineer / Energy Manager to lead the management, optimisation and statutory compliance of mechanical and electrical (M&E) systems across BTP’s estate.
The post holder will ensure that all building services operate safely, efficiently and in accordance with legal and regulatory requirements, while driving energy‑reduction initiatives that support BTP’s Net Zero and broader sustainability objectives.
Acting as BTP’s technical authority for M&E and energy management, you will provide strategic advice, deliver compliance and assurance programmes, and implement cost‑effective engineering and energy solutions that enhance operational resilience, reduce lifecycle costs and minimise environmental impact across the estate.
What you'll be doing:
- Lead the management, optimisation and statutory compliance of all M&E systems across BTP’s estate.
- Maintain PPM schedules and provide technical expertise for refurbishment and new‑build projects.
- Oversee specialist contractors and support procurement for M&E and energy‑related works.
- Drive BTP’s energy strategy, including monitoring, reporting and delivering consumption‑reduction initiatives.
- Ensure compliance with ESOS, SECR and other statutory energy reporting requirements.
- Act as the intelligent client, advising senior stakeholders on technical and financial implications.
- Liaise with internal teams and external partners including DfT, Network Rail and regulatory bodies.
- Prepare M&E compliance, energy performance and sustainability reports for governance boards.
- Contribute to lifecycle planning for plant and equipment.
- Champion continuous improvement through innovative, sustainable and data‑driven solutions.
What you'll bring to the team:
- Degree level education (or equivalent) in Mechanical/Electrical Engineering, Building Services, Architecture, Surveying or a related discipline.
- Membership of a relevant professional body (e.g., RIBA, RICS, BIFM, CIAT).
- Detailed technical knowledge and substantial experience operating at a senior (managerial) level.
- Proven experience managing M&E systems across a multi-site estate.
- Strong understanding of statutory compliance for building services.
- Experience in energy management and delivering carbon reduction initiatives.
- Familiarity with BMS systems and energy monitoring platforms.
- Technical expertise in M&E engineering and energy efficiency.
- Ability to interpret and analyse complex data and produce clear, actionable insights.
- Strong stakeholder engagement and influencing skills
- Knowledge of building regulations, H&S legislation, and energy compliance frameworks; emerging technologies in building services and energy efficiency; RIBA stages, estates governance and strategic planning frameworks; and of estates and facilities management within regulated environments.
