Salary: £39,871.93 plus £4,613.61 London allowance (FTE)

Contract Type: Fixed Term Contract for 23 months 

Location: 200 Buckingham Palace Rd, London

Type of Working Arrangement: Blended approach of home and office-working is available

The Opportunity:

Are you looking for your next exciting career move? British Transport Police (BTP) is offering a unique opportunity for an experienced Accredited Financial Investigator (AFI) to join our specialist Project Plume team — a nationally recognised, multi-agency initiative tackling cash-based money laundering investigations in the waste industry.

As an AFI with BTP, you’ll be at the forefront of financial crime disruption, using your expertise to trace, restrain, and recover criminal assets. You’ll lead investigations under the Proceeds of Crime Act (POCA), manage complex cash seizure cases, and present compelling evidence in both criminal and civil courts. 
This is a high-impact role where your work will directly contribute to dismantling organised crime groups and protecting the UK’s financial and environmental systems. You’ll collaborate with a wide range of partners including the National Crime Agency, HMRC, Environment Agency, and the Joint Unit for Waste Crime, participating in joint operations and intelligence-led investigations.

What you'll be doing:

  • Lead cash-based money laundering investigations in the waste industry as part of Project Plume (a multi-agency operation in partnership with the Joint Unit for Waste Crime, National Economic Crime Centre, MPS, HMRC and BTP).
  • Prepare and present high-quality evidential material in both criminal and civil courts.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external law enforcement and regulatory partners to develop intelligence and deliver joint operations.
  • Draw on specialist skills to provide support and advice senior investigating officers to identify potential risks under POCA legislation, Data Protection and Human rights for live enquiries, as well as gathering evidence to support investigations.        

What you'll bring to the team:

  • Be a current accredited financial investigator with Part 2, Part 8 and Part 5 powers (or be within the NCA defined self-suspension period that will enable immediate re-accreditation with refresher courses/ action plans) Must have passed the relevant NPIA (now NCA) Accredited Financial Investigation Course.
  • PIP level 2 or equivalent
  • Demonstrable experience in financial crime investigations, including money laundering and fraud.
  • Strong working knowledge of POCA, PACE, CPIA, GDPR, and other relevant legislation and investigative procedures.

Additional Information: 

Please note: Applicants must have passed the relevant NPIA (now NCA) Accredited Financial Investigation Course to be considered for this role.  

Applicants must be willing to travel to all Force areas when required
