The Opportunity
British Transport Police have an exciting opportunity for a People Business Partner to join our People Delivery team.
This is a busy, hands-on and genuinely varied role, working with a great team of supportive, experienced colleagues. You’ll partner across a wide range of departments, giving you exposure to different operational environments, leadership styles and challenges — no two days look the same.
You’ll work closely with senior leaders, providing clear, pragmatic HR advice across complex people issues, organisational change and day-to-day leadership decisions — not just at a strategic level, but in the detail, making balanced calls and keeping things moving in a demanding environment. You will take a coaching and evidence-based approach, supporting leaders to improve performance, navigate complex challenges and deliver sustainable outcomes.
With a strong organisational focus on strengthening performance and driving innovation, this role plays a key part — combining business partnering, projects and change work to improve performance, capability and how the organisation operates.
This role needs someone who enjoys pace, handles complexity well, and can switch quickly between strategic thinking and practical delivery. You’ll need the breadth of experience to operate credibly at senior HR / Business Partner level, combined with the confidence to challenge, influence and deliver.
What you’ll be doing:
- Partnering with senior leaders across a range of departments to shape and deliver people plans aligned to operational priorities
- Providing clear, pragmatic HR advice on complex people issues, influencing decisions and driving workable outcomes
- Leading and developing a People team, ensuring a high-quality, consistent and responsive HR service
- Using data, workforce intelligence and insight to identify trends, challenge thinking and drive evidence-based decisions that improve performance and target interventions where they add most value
- Managing complex and high-risk employee relations cases, acting as a trusted decision-maker and adviser
- Supporting and leading change and improvement activity, recommending and embedding better ways of working across the business
What you’ll bring:
- MCIPD qualified (or equivalent) with strong, up-to-date knowledge of UK employment law and HR best practice
- Proven experience operating at senior HR / Business Partner level in a complex organisation, influencing and constructively challenging senior leaders
- Strong track record of leading organisational change initiatives, driving cultural, behavioural and performance improvements
- Ability to build credible relationships across a wide range of stakeholders, including trade unions and external partners
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to use data and insight to improve outcomes and support decision-making
- Experience of leading, coaching and developing teams, delivering a high-quality, customer-focused HR service
- Excellent communication, negotiation and resilience, with the capability to deliver under pressure in a fast-paced environment
